Temple Fair - 地坛庙会
地坛庙会
I went to temple fair on the second day of China's Lunar New Year - the Year of Rat, it was a cold winter day. As part of traditional celebration around new year, temple fair usually lasts 7 days, there are several temple fairs in Beijing during new year. I went to the temple of Earth, I was really looking forward to it, it has been at least 12 years since the last time I went there.
Temple fair is still the same as I remembered, snack street still has different variety of the snacks from all regions of China. Main street still has all bargain toys, pendants, ornaments that people would spend a few RMBs to take home and never look at them again. A central stage was built for pre-scheduled performance. It was Africa dancing when I went there. I didn't stay as I was not interested to watch Africa culture show when I came to see traditional Chinese culture. Individual culture shows are less than what I remembered...More tents are built to show exotic programs like snake shows etc. Snake show is not really a Chinese culture, is it? There are some tents are even showing acrobatic programs like a mini version of the cirque du soleil. — I guess it is more popular to show foreign culture these days
There were a lot more people though, everywhere.
I took a picture using blackberry in front of the entrance. It turns out pretty good, attaching here.
