My dear workaholic Jewish friends and Yom Kippur
I find myself surrounded by Jews. It happened at DoubleClick, where I would just accidentally find out, one by one, that people I am friend with are Jews, it is even more the case at FreeWheel. Yeah, I have Jewish partners. I was joking with them last night that I would become more a Jew by having meetings with my Jewish friends on Yom Kippur...
All jokes aside, bits and pieces, I actually started accumulating knowledge about Jewish and Judaism, via my friends. Like the synagogue that Andrew taught me. Like you are a Jew by birth, not like any other religion that I know. Like you are not supposed to say "Happy Yom Kippur" because Yom Kippur is not a "be happy" holiday. Like those "Yiddish" words that Jon is trying to get me to pronounce correctly.
I googled "Jewish" today, on Yom Kippur. I am surprised to find that Jews only account for 2% of the US population, however, almost a third of the friends I made in US are Jews! Amazing, isn't it! Am I a "Jewish magnet" or was I just dropped into Jewish communities where ever I went in the last 10 years?! What is even more amazing is that I find they all have such respectable, rare find traits in common: extremely smart and diligent. Those are my Jewish friends, my dear workaholic Jewish fiends working even on Yom Kippur!
I choose today to celebrate, celebrate my fortune to run into them, celebrate them giving me a chance to get to know them, celebrate my friendship with them! I celebrate because I am so lucky to be friends with and surrounded by so many talented, brilliant, diligent, "workaholic" Jews!
On that note, this ends my "reflection" on Yom Kippur.
— Couldn't resist to put a happy face at the end even you are not supposed to "be happy" on Yom Kippur.
