Will bookstore ever go away?
It was nice to have an afternoon completely free, I spent time wondering around university avenue with no purpose. After a regular triple venti latte to get me energized, I started my exploration. It was a little chilly, would have been perfect if it were sunny, however, life was never about how perfect it is, right?
I quickly found myself ended at Barnes & Noble next door. With my computers, kindles, and iPhones, I have honestly not been to a bookstore for a long time. I was intrigued by this old fashioned feeling of randomly picking out a book from the shelf and reading it. It felt so different and remote when holding a book in hand and flipping through the pages, it brought back all the old memories. So, here I am, when the world has moved on to having books, music in computers, ebooks, iphones, ipods, I found myself rediscovering the warm feeling of holding a book in my hand, at a random chilly afternoon in Palo Alto.
The books you read define the character of who you are, when i was a child, a close friend of my dad had this entire room of books at his home, he spent all his fortune on collecting any book he can get hold of. I immediately fell in love with his treasure, spent all my school breaks in his treasured room...To this day, whenever I think of him, it is this whole room of books that comes to my mind first, he is my childhood idol. Same as music, the music you listen to says who you are. Years ago when I was still at DoubleClick, I was invited to Ola's house for a party, one thing I remember so vividly was his two gigantic shelves of the music collections he got, that became how I see him, the Swedish gentleman with an amazing collection of music.
Now close your eyes, can you imagine you invited a friend over, at your study room, you have nothing but a computer, you turn on your computer, and say: hey, let me show you the books, music I have got...It is different, doesn't feel the same, or, does it? Or, maybe, the world has moved on, I am just finding myself fell in love with this old fashioned feeling of holding a paper book, a music CD in my hands in this random chilly afternoon...
I finally took home a handful of books, almost too heavy to carry, however, I felt fulfilled with joy. Now I am in bed, reading the books I got, old fashioned way, I am having a great time!
